Gobble, gobble?

Watching the final episode of The Next Iron Chef with baited breath, one of the two remaining contestants stated that at the first Thanksgiving feast, there was no turkey...(slow exhale)...what???

Hmmm. On a mission to find the truth, I read several articles, (including one from William Bradford, who was actually at the first Thanksgiving Feast in 1621), I came to the conclusion that yes, Mr. Iron Chef, they did have turkey. While the wild turkeys were just one of the many birds consumed then, they also had venison. Have you ever seen any children drawing pictures of deer for their Thanksgiving feast? What if the President pardoned a deer instead of a turkey? I know, I'm just being silly now.

You can never do any kind of research online without finding waaaaaayyyy more than you wanted to know originally. For instance, did you know that there are many disputes as to the actual original date of the first Thanksgiving? Not to mention, which country actually had the first Thanksgiving. Canada celebrates Thanksgiving the second Monday in October, the U.S. the fourth Thursday in November. And on, and on, and on.

The snow on our pumpkins (yes it snowed here in Washington today!) reminded me of the whole reason we believe the Pilgrims celebrated with a Thanksgiving harvest. They were thankful to God for their lives, for the Native Americans that taught them how to plant crops, and for those bountiful crops that would enable them to survive the harsh winters of Massachusetts.

They were simply
Thankful. To. Just. Be.

I don't know about you, but that certainly puts things in perspective for me.

With that said, what are you THANKful for?

Wishing you and your family a very blessed Thanksgiving.
